Assistant Vice President, Multi-Franchise Auditor, Internal Audit Department

The Internal Audit Department at SMBC is responsible for examining the overall the internal control system, governance, risk management frameworks, operations, and compliance with laws and regulations are effective and efficient. The Internal Audit Department, Asia Pacific Division (IADAP), based in Singapore, is responsible for auditing SMBC units and activities in the Asia Pacific region.
Due to an expanded mandate to cover additional group companies and entities acquired under the Multi-Franchise Strategy - owned either directly by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) or by its parent holding company, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG), IADAP requires more staff to maintain risk oversight and align 3rd line activities across SMFG/ SMBC diverse operations in banking, multi-financing, securities, asset management etc, that reflect the group’s broad strategic interests and operational footprint.
As part of IADAP, this role sits within the Multi-Franchise and Group Company (MFGC) audit pillar, providing independent audit supervision and assurance acitivities that support the Bank’s growth and expansion strategy across Asia Pacific through both inorganic growth via Multi-Franchise (MF) and organic growth via Group Companies (GC) across diverse jurisdictions and business models. Beyond core audit, the role offers opportunities to engage at the intersection of audit strategy discussions, governance dialogue, audit capability-building initiatives, and cross-entity collaboration, which makes it uniquely positioned for auditors who value breadth, versatility, adaptability, and strategic exposure.
In this role, you will support IADAP Management for effective risk-based supervision, coordination and capability uplift across MF entities and GC, collaborate with local internal audit counterparts, senior leadership, and regional stakeholders, to ensure the MFGC entities operate within SMFG/SMBC's framework, methodologies, and quality standards. Your responsibilities also include promoting knowledge sharing to enhance control, compliance, and risk management throughout the organization.

Key Responsibilities
- Act as a central point of contact between IADAP and MFGC entities on audit-related matters, including coordinate pre-consultations/approvals for appointment of internal audit key personnel, updates to audit charters, policies, and methodologies, and timely escalation of significant audit and risk matters to senior management.
- Review risk assessments and annual audit plans of MFGC entities to ensure alignment with the SMFG/SMBC audit standards/methodologies, quality standards, risk priorities, particularly for high-risk or emerging areas.
- Lead or participate in audits of Group Companies, and joint audits of MF entities in collaboration with the MF internal audit teams, while promoting knowledge sharing to enhance control, compliance and risk management, ensuring consistent understanding and application of audit best practices across entities.
- Oversee quality assurance (both external and internal) and improvement activities for local audit functions, including to provide guidance on development and implementation of corrective action plans arising from external quality assurance findings where necessary.
- Provide training to MFGC entities’ auditors on the SMBC’s audit methodology and risk assessment processes. Provide advisory and direct oversight for MFGC entities without an internal audit function.
- Engage in and coordinate IADAP periodic governance forums, including meetings with local audit management, senior management, and Audit Committees of MF entities.
- Prepare and present audit oversight reporting periodically to senior management and stakeholders, summarizing a holistic view of audit coverage, key findings, and significant issues across MFGC entities
- Monitor regulatory compliance reports and track remediation of issues identified by external or regulatory audits.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of regulatory requirements impacting the bank and non-bank MFGC entities.
- Contribute to the development of strategic initiatives for internal audit within the SMFG/SMBC, by supporting innovation in audit processes and technology adoption.
Job Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in internal audit, ideally within financial institutions. Experience in auditing consumer, retail banking audit or non‑bank financial institutions (e.g., multi‑financing, securities, or asset management entities) will be considered a strong plus.
- Solid grounding in audit standards, governance, risk management, and regulatory requirements.
- CPA or equivalent qualification from an internationally recognized accounting body. Certification in internal auditing (i.e., CIA) is preferred.
- Excellent communication, analytical, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills.
- Meticulous, disciplined, and self-motivated, with the passion to pursue excellence
Willing to travel within the Asia Pacific region for audits and supervisory activities
