Due to continuous growth, we have a new opportunity within our Capital Markets, Australia department. This role will support the origination, structuring, pricing, execution, and distribution of syndicated loan transactions across both underwritten and non‑underwritten deals. The position works closely with stakeholders across Corporate Banking, Structured | Project Finance and other front office department; and plays an active role in supporting senior team members in developing and maintaining strong relationships across SMBC, as well as with bank and non‑bank investors in the Australian and Asia Pacific markets.

 

Reporting to the Executive Director, this position will be responsible for:

  • Assist with origination, structuring, pricing, underwriting, execution, bookrunning, sell‑down, and distribution of syndicated transactions.
  • Prepare credit analysis, liquidity analysis, sell‑down strategies, underwriting papers, term sheets, offer letters, financing proposals, and information memoranda.
  • Support internal and external reporting, marketing materials, publicity materials, and management‑requested research (including loan market data analysis etc).
  • Coordinate syndication processes including bank meetings, presentations, secondary loan trading, documentation and due diligence reviews, and liaison with legal counsel and third‑party advisors.
  • Contribute to ESG‑related workstreams, including pitching, execution, reporting, and external engagement.
  • Collaborate with Corporate Banking and Structured Finance teams to support client coverage and generate MLAB syndication opportunities.
  • Work closely with regional and global teams to identify new investor opportunities and refer debt transactions appropriately.
  • Uphold and enhance SMBC’s reputation through timely, efficient execution and a strong “Team SMBC / Team Sydney” approach.
  • Preparing underwriting papers in conjunction with senior managers to present to Capital Markets Group, SFDA and CDAPD.

 

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • 3-5 years of banking experience in corporate banking and/or a syndication role, preferably within a major Australian bank.
  • Experience in loan structuring and negotiating terms and conditions with clients, credit teams, and legal counsel.
  • Established relationships with clients and banking counterparts in the Australian market (preferred but not a requirement).
  • Well‑developed interpersonal and influencing capabilities, with experience managing key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong time management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Sound sales and negotiation skills, or a demonstrated willingness to develop these through on‑the‑job experience and training.
  • Ability to deliver high‑quality presentations to senior internal stakeholders and external clients.
  • Strong written and verbal business communication skills.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • University qualification in Banking, Finance, or a related discipline.
